The term “indigenous peoples” is used to define distinct peoples who are trying to maintain and pursue their group identity. Today, no formal international definition has been adopted in recognizing these peoples. However, through various conventions and declarations, characteristics of indigenous peoples have been outlined such as;
peoples who social, cultural, and economic conditions distinguish them from a national community and whose status is regulated by their own customs or traditions;
peoples on account of their descent from the populations which inhabited the geographical region at the time of conquest or colonization or establishment of present day countries; and
self-identification as indigenous peoples shall be regarded as a fundamental criterion.
